Save Public Access to SSDI

Read this message and follow the links to learn more:   http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2012/01/29/ssdi-call-to-action/
Carefully follow the instructions if you wish to have your comments included in the Ways and Means Committee Testimony.  Pay attention to meeting the deadlines.  CAFG testimony to the Ways and Means Committee - click here.

Contact your Representatives and Senators: House of Representatives http://www.house.gov/representatives/
Senate http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

Ways and Means Committee - send individual messages to the Ways and Means Committee members http://waysandmeans.house.gov/About/Members.htm

Help us contact associations and organizations of other professionals who rely upon access to the SSDI - attorneys, title companies, oil/gas and mineral companies, landsmen, and information professionals.

Some sample messages will be posted below.  Keep it short, sweet, and factual.  Incorporate keys words like commerce,  business, economic impact.  Call, fax, email, post on the Congressman's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Some Congressmen only take email from constituents.  Written letters may be more effective than email. Online petitions have been known to have very little value - in many cases they are considered
ONE correspondence about an issue no matter how many signatures they contain.  Get your spouse, significant other, or family members to help.

Bills effecting access to SSDI:
• HR 3475, Keeping IDs Safe Act of 2011 http://tinyurl.com/6uwu4aw
(If enacted, this bill would effectively end public access to the death file)
• S 1534, the Identity Theft and Tax Fraud Prevention Act http://tinyurl.com/75de8o9 (If
enacted, this bill prohibits disclosure of the deceased’s SSN in calendar year of death and
calendar year following death)
• HR 3482 To prevent identity theft and tax crimes.http://tinyurl.com/83p4b4p
(If enacted, this bill prohibits disclosure of the deceased’s SSN in calendar year of
death and calendar year following death)
• HR 3215 To prevent identity theft and tax fraud http://tinyurl.com/7fgsd5s
(If enacted, this bill prohibits disclosure of the deceased’s SSN in calendar year of
death and calendar year following death)

CAFG actively networked with more than fifty bar associations, twenty-nine landmen associations, fifteen title company associations, Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP), and numerous attorneys in an effort to encourage more professionals to voice their concerns.  Our members are contacting Committee members and their congressmen, and submitting testimony for the record on the hearing.
